OIS IditaREAD 2010

 Welcome to
       IditaREAD!
The Second Annual Running

The IditaREAD is a reading incentive program that parallels Alaska’s famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Every classroom and every student in our school is participating!

Every student is embarking on a reading journey beginning February 1 and lasting until March 12. The students will be given an Official OIS IditaREAD 2010 Log Book where they will record time spent reading each day; one minute equals one mile. The challenge: trace the Iditarod Trail, from Anchorage to Nome, from checkpoint to checkpoint, by reading 1,112 minutes. We hope that you will support your child with their at home reading and encourage them to read books that are at their “just right” reading level. The IditaREAD log book is to be used to record time spent with at-home reading. We are asking parents to initial the log book every Thursday.

Each classroom serves as one of the checkpoints on the trail. Every classroom will have a team sled that advances around the school from checkpoint to checkpoint. Classroom team sleds will move by averaging the number of minutes read by students in the class. Be sure to ask your child what their classroom checkpoint is!

Orono Intermediate School has a strong commitment to helping children become life-long learners through fostering a love of reading. This website will reflect the progress of the class teams throughout during the IditaREAD. The IditaREAD will culmibate with the "Musher's Ball" the week of March 15th where awards will be made at each grade level for the student who accumulates the most miles (minutes) traveled – so even after they have reached the finish line in Nome they can continue to read and accumulate miles!

We’re looking forward to a fun, exciting, and enriching IditaREAD this year. Thank you for your support. We’ll see you on the trail!
